BioTomohiro Katanosaka is the epitome of the "journeyman" player. Particularly in the latter stages of his career, he seemed to turn up at a different club every year, eager to work as hard as possible and contribute to the team's success, even if it was only for six or ten matches a season. Earlier in his career, however, Katanosaka had quite a bit of fame as a member of the stage-champion Sanfrecce Hiroshima squad in 1994, and later as one of the "hard-body" defenders who earned Kashiwa Reysol its reputation as a tough, physical opponent in the late 1990s. By 2000, age and injuries began to catch up with him, but Katanosaka struggled for a year at Oita Trinita in the J2, before earning a spot with Gamba Osaka in 2001. The next two years he had a fairly successful spell as a utility defender, first at Gamba and then at Vegalta Sendai. When Oita Trinita won promotion to the J1, last year the Kyushu native returned to Trinita for one last season, but he finally decided to call in a career at the end of 2003.
