Pursa-kun and Kotono
The mascot of Kyoto Purple Sanga is a mythical bird often associated with emperors in ancient China and Japan, known as "the immortal (or "undying") bird". In English this tends to be interpreted as a Phoenix -- a legendary mythological bird that rises from its own ashes. However, Yokohama FC already have a claim on that symbol, so it is hard to say whether it is an accurate identification. You can callĀ it The Purple Bird. . . . unless youre from Philadelphia, in which case you can call it "The Poypal Boyd"
Pursa receivedĀ a girlfriend in the early 00's, whose name is Kotono. The term is taken from a Japanese stringed instrument -- the Koto -- which all imperial princesses (and geisha) were expected to learn how to play. How that relates to football is a bit difficult to determine, but at least Kyoto now has mascots for both genders.
